Pulitzer Amsterdam Review

The most characterful five-star in Amsterdam, and the benchmark for heritage-canal-house hotels anywhere.

Pulitzer Amsterdam, Nine Streets, Netherlands

Overview: What is Pulitzer Amsterdam?

Pulitzer Amsterdam is 225 rooms spread across 25 interconnected 17th- and 18th-century canal houses in Amsterdam's UNESCO-protected canal belt. The hotel opened in 1970 under Herbert Pulitzer (grandson of Joseph Pulitzer) and was redesigned in 2015-2016 by Jacu Strauss, creative director of Lore Group. The redesign preserved original beams, exposed brick, grand staircases, and ornate fireplaces, while introducing Collector's Suites inspired by former occupants of the houses.

Rooms at Pulitzer Amsterdam

225 rooms and suites. No two are alike, thanks to the 25-house layout. Collector's Suites are themed to former occupants (a book collector, an antique dealer, an art collector). Bathrooms feature Le Labo amenities. Rooms include a bike repair kit (this is Amsterdam).

Service and staff

Lore Group's signature approach: specific, curated, and unpretentious. The team runs 90-minute canal tours on the hotel's 1909 teak salon boat, which once ferried Winston Churchill around Amsterdam.

Food and drink

Jansz is the all-day restaurant, named for 17th-century craftsman Volkert Jansz and serving modern Dutch cuisine. Pulitzer's Bar is an old-timey leather-and-bowties cocktail room. Pulitzer Garden is the al-fresco option in the interior courtyard.

Design and architecture

Jacu Strauss' 2015-2016 redesign is the reason to stay here. Each canal house uses different wall color and carpet so you know when you have crossed from one to the next. The design absorbs 400 years of Dutch craftsmanship, from Golden Age paintings at the Rijksmuseum to details on canal facades.
